Description:
In his possibly most daring film, Gutiérrez Alea brilliantly captures the climate of uncertainty prevailing over Cuba in the early 1960s.
The film's protagonist, Sergio, is depicted in the opening scenes as happy to see off his wife and parents and friends; they are fleeing Cuba in the wake of the Bay of Pigs invasion for America. Left behind in the 'Brave New World', Sergio is sceptical of the ability of the Revolution to make a real change in Cuban society, observing that it is only the latest passion for an ever-changing society.

"With all his profound contradictions, Sergio can lead us to a conscious grasp of what underdevelopment means in economic, cultural, and ideological terms /.../. Sergio cannot reach an understanding of the values underpinning the world being born, and he goes under. In a profound sense, it is Sergio who appears to be underdeveloped in the world surrounding him, that of revolution." (Tomás Gutiérrez Alea)
