Description:
A delicate and intimate drama about the vicissitudes of love in the 18th-century world of female artists. Best Screenplay Award at Cannes 2019.
The setting is eighteenth-century Brittany, where an Italian noblewomen commissions a young painter, Marianne, to do a wedding portrait of her daughter, Hélo?se, without her knowing. The countess wants the portrait to be shown to a wealthy prospective husband in Milan, because headstrong Hélo?se would never consent to sitting for any such picture. Therefore, Marianne must observe her model by day to paint her portrait at night. Day by day, the two women become closer as they share Héloise's last moments of freedom before the impending wedding.

"I am the product of male gaze - we all are. I've spent my life loving films that sometimes hated me, identifying with Superman, for example. Female gaze is a hybrid - it's really about knowing both of these worlds. I am a lesbian, and I know how to live in a male-dominated environment. But the question is, can they?" (Céline Sciamma)
