Description:
Thirteen-year-old Ahmed is caught between his imam's ideals of purity and teenage temptations. Can the joy of living override his instinct for violence?
Biracial, big-city teen Ahmed has developed a dangerous connection with a militant imam, who plants poisonous ideas in the boy's head. At school, Ahmed refuses to shake the hand of his teacher In?s because she's a woman, while at home, he tells off his white mom for drinking alcohol. Clues suggest these changes in Ahmed's attitude are recent, as a boy who seems to have been a relatively normal teen just weeks before has become obsessed with prayer and the "purity" of those around him. The imam, who looks only a little older than Ahmed himself, celebrates martyrs who have shed blood and sacrificed their own lives for holy jihad.

"We decided to make Ahmed a very young boy, a child even, because that allowed us to show how such a malleable young brain, and young body, could put itself at the service of a hate-based ideal spread through the preaching of an imam. The child believes in this ideal of purity. He believes it with all his being and becomes more radical than the radicals." (Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne)
