Description:

A romanticized exploration of space, time and the medium of film, Souvenir is a semi-autobiographical story of a heroine who seems to be losing her grip on life.
England; the early 1980s. Young film student Julie wants to use her camera to better understand the world. This shy woman is well aware of her privileged social position and, as she explains, sees her Super 8 camera as a way to break out of her own little bubble. She thinks she is mediocre, but the photos and moving images that flow into the film bear witness to her special gaze. In an unassuming, almost documentary approach, we are introduced to Julie's student milieu, into which Anthony unexpectedly enters. He is older and more distinguished. He harbours a secret that Julie only uncovers later, but that then dramatically changes everything.

"I recognize that I'm not following a story pattern, and it's not that I'm consciously not doing that, but I'm very careful to not do something just for effect or because it's what's expected, or what even an audience might like. It's got to be close, close to my own experience but also interesting to me in terms of something unfolding. I fell out of love with any kind of imposed structure a long time ago, and I'm really just trying to follow my own instincts. Sometimes those instincts may seem to be anti-dramatic. Or I see drama in small things." (Joanna Hogg)
