Description:
A critical portrayal of contemporary France, Les Misérables is a provocative insight into the complex tensions between deprivileged neighbourhood residents and police. Cannes 2019 Jury Prize.
Stéphane has recently joined the Anti-Crime Squad in Montfermeil, in the suburbs of Paris, where Victor Hugo set his famed novel Les Miserables. Alongside his new colleagues - both experienced members of the team - he quickly discovers tensions running high among local gangs. When the trio find themselves overrun during the course of an arrest, a drone captures the encounter, threatening to expose the reality of everyday life.

"It's easy to live with each other when you have money. When you don't, it's a lot more complicated: you need compromises, arrangements, little deals... it's a matter of survival. For the cops too, they are in survival mode, things are tough for them too. Most of these cops aren't well-educated - they themselves live in difficult conditions, and in the same neighbourhood. Les Misérables is neither pro-lowlife nor pro-cops, I've tried to be as fair as possible." (Ladj Ly)
