Description:
A dreamlike story about the disintegration of a small community on the Yugoslav-Italian border.
Mid-20th century in Venetian Slovenia, a crumbling community on the border of Yugoslavia and Italy. In the midst of chestnut woods lives a stingy carpenter named Mario, manically counting his pennies. When his wife dies, he gets the terrible sinking feeling that his life has been lived in vain. On the other side of the river, Martha, the last chestnut woman, is ready to leave the desolate valleys for good in search of a better life across the ocean… The decomposing tale fuses reality with elements of dreams, memories and fantasy.

"The film is dedicated to Slavia Friulana, a border region between Slovenia and Italy, and its people. We wanted to capture on film the spirit of this special place shaped by centuries of political tensions, poverty, and emigration. We wanted these areas to come to life like the film's protagonist - through the atmosphere of mainly abandoned villages and their specific architecture, through visions and voices left behind by former inhabitants, and, most importantly, through nature - by adopting the form inherent in these areas: like a fairy tale that you read before nightfall." (Gregor Božič)
