Ten Years of the Art Cinema Network of Slovenia

    14. 11. 2019

Director of the Slovenian Film Centre, Nataša Bučar, gave the opening address at the Art Cinema Network of Slovenia professional meeting, then handing over to Nina Peče Grilc, representative of the Art Cinema Network of Slovenia who presented a detailed overview of Slovenian art cinemas. Several speakers dealt with the issue of digitalization or digitization. Peče Grilc explained that a branched-out art cinema network beneficially revitalises urban cinemas and city centres. She outlined the strategy for 2020–2025, which in her opinion is quite ambitious; the need for qualified personnel, as well as digitization is considerable. Mateja Demšič, Head of the Municipality of Ljubljana’s Culture Department, spoke about the successful revival of the Kinodvor Cinema. She stressed that film culture is essential to the education of competent citizens. The audience statistics are encouraging; between 2009 and 2018 attendance figures almost doubled. Moreover, Kinodvor will get a new venue in 2023 – a miniplex in Ajdovščina underpass.

Things look promising not only in the capital; representatives of various municipalities described the situation of local cinemas, usually forming part of cultural centres. Kino Park is being renovated in Pomurje next to the castle park. Its artistic director Duša Škof described the development and renovation of theatre halls and expressed her satisfaction with the attendance and subscribers’ figures. Boštjan Glažar from Pivka spoke about the renovation of Pivka cultural centre’s exterior and updated technology; successful renovation was also the topic spoken on by the representatives of the Municipality of Tolmin, Uroš Brežan and Špela Mrak, programme coordinator at Kinogledališče Tolmin.

The operation of the Nova Gorica Cinema was presented by Deputy Mayor Elena Zavadlav Ušaj and Marinka Saksida, Municipality of Nova Gorica’s Head of the Social Activities Department. In 2018, 127 events were organised at the Nova Gorica Cinema, of which 119 were film screenings attended by 9400 viewers. Rene Puhar and Žiga Brdnik spoke about the Municipality of Maribor art cinema’s cooperation with various partners and the lack of marketing funds, which compels them to employ social network advertising or social media targeting. The professional meeting also included a discussion led by Vice-President of the Art Cinema Network of Slovenia, Jure Matičič, who drew attention to the formerly plentiful supply of art cinemas in Domžale, Mengeš and the neighbouring regions, whereas Nina Peče Grilc and President of the Art Cinema Network of Slovenia, Nina Ukmar, contributed to the discussion by providing some useful insights.
