Novecento
Dvajseto stoletje
The great European epic with Robert De Niro and Gerard Depardieu in leading roles problematizes the rise of Italian fascism through the fate of two families - rich landowners and peasants.

The movie begins on the day of Verdi's death. It records the births of boys in two families - Alfredo to a rich landowning family, and Olmo to peasants living on their land. The boys grow up together as playmates. As they grow up, the boys also grow apart. Their fathers die, and so the young men become heirs to the ancient customs and feuds of the region. Mussolini is on the rise.

"For me Novecento is a microcosm, as Strategia del ragno had been to some extent before it. If you look at a speck of dirt under the microscope it is as if you were looking at the universe in the great planetarium of a film by Nicholas Ray. A speck of dirt makes you dream, and the microcosm of Novecento really ought to be like that: a tiny region of Italy much enlarged and thus in some ways made- horrible word-universal." (Bernardo Bertolucci)
